As (Some) Others See Us

Not all foreign commentary on the Irish “Yes” vote was as flattering as that reported in the Irish papers:

see http://www.gocomics.com/jeffdanziger/2009/10/04/

BTW this shows how enduring certain ethnic stereotypes are in the US!

Danzinger’s main claim to fame is that he was ranked 35 in the list of the top ‘100 people who are screwing up America’.

http://www.adherents.com/people/100_people_harming_America.html

His entry states that:

“Danzinger made a cartoon depicting Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice as a ignorant black maid. Danzinger and other liberals are unfairly allowed to use racist imagery as long as its aimed against conservatives.”

Stereotyping seems to be his trade.

I’m not sure that the Irish Times helps the cause when one of their Lisbon reports is filed from Kitty O’Shea’s in Brussels. But maybe that does reflect how we’re seen in Brussels, the good natured drinkers who occasionally make a bit of a scene.

It’s like those old Punch cartoons! A fatwah upon Dazinger surely! (nice find Brendan)

Can someone explain how that cartoon

“…shows how enduring certain ethnic stereotypes are in the US!…”

And if you can. Can you address the idea of “certain ethnic”.

I’m sure the US has better things to do that call the Irish drunk & violent.

Though, I have to admit I don’t see a hint of that in the cartoon.

Or maybe the “certain ethnic” is the begging bowl and not enterprise?

Opps, 😳

This is Bernard Goldberg.

“So while listing individuals as people who are “screwing up America” is clearly not meant by Goldberg as a compliment to the individuals on the list (although many have taken it as such, because they admire many of the other prominent people whose company they have found themselves in on this list), our listing the religious affiliation of these individuals should in no way be seen as criticism of these religious groups or outlooks. Goldberg’s selection of people for this list had nothing to do with the religious affiliation of people. In fact, many people on the list have essentially the same religious affiliation that he does. No one religious affiliation is predominant on this list. For every every religious group represented on this list one can think of numerous prominent individuals from the same religious affiliation whose actions are philosophies are quite opposite those of their co-religionist counterpart (or fellow atheist, agnostic, etc.) on this list (for good or ill, depending on your perspective).”

John,

Does “Goldberg” know what people are?

“In fact, many people on the list have essentially the same religious affiliation that he does.”

What is the religious affiliation of Goldberg? Oh, apparently the same people on the list.

What?

John,

“For every every”

Do you bother to read anything before you post a link?

When you’re using the internetwebbythingy you should be careful.

I think that the cartoon shows more insight than most political and economic commentators here in relation to the Lisbon debate that was about everything except the Lisbon treaty.

bernie goldberg is a regular guest on the bill o’reilly show on fox news. they usually lambast ‘the drive-by liberal media’ for mocking conservatives such as sarah palin.

There is nothing wrong with that cartoon. I found it funny and insightful — and it certainly beats listening to the reams of uninformed commentary we get in this country about the U.S.

Obviously everything Jeff Danziger knows about the Irish he learned from Brennan’s Bread ads.

Where is the whiskey, three legged stool and potatoes boiling in the cast iron pot on the crane over the open fire. Do not forget the thatched cottage with the half door and the pigs in the background. What Danziger knows about Irish stereotypes would fit on the back of a postage stamp.
