In the past year, according to an estate agent’s report, more Irish country houses and castles have been sold than in the previous four years combined. So just who is buying up our big houses? Our reporter Rhona Tarrant has been finding out.

Most of these properties are fake castles with neither a real turret or moat in sight but it’s a good selling angle to impress the folks at home.
It’s good also to have these big houses are maintained and a free promo for Savills in the NYT in a typical property puff piece.
It’s not just rural estates. Here’s a suburban castle down the road from me that was sold off market for €4.2m last month.
